The History of Cadillac

Not many know this, but Cadillac was named after Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the founder of the city of Detroit (where the first Cadillac was made). It was founded in 1902 by Henry Leland, who designed the luxury car brand’s crest to resemble the coat of arms belonging to de la Mothe.

Cadillac was a trailblazer in many ways. In fact, they were the first manufacturer to make a fully enclosed passenger cabin in 1910. Before then, the cabin area was mostly, if not completely, open, and riding in a car didn’t come with full protection from the elements. In many ways, Cadillac made the first versions of what resembles a modern vehicle as we know it today.

They also made the first car without a crank when they introduced their Model Thirty in 1912. This was the first car with an electronic self-starter. Before then, drivers would have to turn a crank to start their car, much like a wind-up toy. Some even say Cadillac is an important part of the feminist movement since, historically, only men were perceived as strong enough to crank an engine. The self-starter car paved the way for more female drivers. Not long after that, Cadillac would introduce an engine that is still widely popular today – the eight-cylinder (V8) engine.

In addition to creating innovative features for vehicles, Cadillac also helped build planes for World War II. It was during that time that they came up with the idea of adding their iconic tailfin feature seen on some of their most beloved models. In many ways, Cadillac was a trendsetter because, throughout the 1950s, you’d see that tailfin on almost every car – Cadillac or otherwise. They were also instrumental in making cars safer. By adding front seatbelts to all of their cars, they promoted a federal law making seatbelts a requirement in all cars. So much of what you’ve come to expect in a car today – Cadillac had something to do with it.

The 2022 Cadillac Lineup

2022 will see some exciting changes for Cadillac. Cadillac has focused heavily on SUVs and crossovers for this year, but they’re also bringing some fun performance sedans to the market.

One such sedan is the 2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing. This compact sedan boasts 472 horsepower and can go from zero to 60 in under four seconds, as well as reach impressive speeds. Pair that with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and it feels ready for the race track but is equally suitable for city life and highway driving. Another performance sedan to look out for is the 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. This midsize sedan has a supercharged V8 engine, reaches high speeds, and comes with either a ten-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. All in all, it’s a really fun drive.

Perhaps one of the most interesting announcements is that of the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq. This one’s hitting the market early and has a lot of buzz around it. It’s a five-seat electric SUV with a 300-mile range that’s here just in time for the gas price surge. The Cadillac Escalade is seeing a revamp in 2022, as well, with active lane control, the buckle-to-drive safety feature, and Super Cruise hands-free driving. These are just some of the things to expect from Cadillac in 2022.
