Our customers have been our priority since James Ryan launched his career in the automotive business in 1945. Mr. Ryan spent over a decade with the Chrysler Motor Division but knew he had more to offer, leaving the company to join Leonard Rydell of Rydell Chevrolet in North Dakota. Over the next 17 years, Mr. Ryan learned the ins and outs of the dealership as the General Sales Manager and General Manager. Then, he finally landed the opportunity of a lifetime––the chance to purchase a dealership of his own.
Mr. Ryan purchased Auran Chevrolet in Minot in 1973, rebranding the dealership as Jim Ryan Chevrolet and immediately launching the Ryan automotive legacy as we know it today. Over the next several decades, Mr. Ryan built a stellar reputation for his fervent commitment to his customers. He promised unparalleled customer service and, unlike many other dealerships, kept that promise and delivered. He was in the business of exceeding his customers’ expectations, an accomplishment he achieved every day. This approach and Mr. Ryan’s commitment to honesty and integrity earned him national acclaim in 1986 when he was named a regional finalist for Time Magazine’s National Dealer of the Year award.
By the new millennium, the Ryan name was synonymous with integrity and transparency. Its reputation was firmly rooted in its small-town values and customer-centric approach, giving Mr. Ryan the satisfaction of retiring after 27 years at the helm. So where would that leave the Ryan name?

Growing up in the automotive industry, Kathleen watched her father intently, learning the intricacies of the automotive business and what it took to run a dealership. By the time her father retired, she was more than capable of taking over and expanding the Ryan name across the state. Kathleen accomplished as much within a few years, adding venues like Ryan Cadillac Minot under the Ryan Family Dealerships brand.
With each addition, Kathleen ensured the dealerships mirrored her father’s legacy of honesty, integrity, and transparency. Like her father, her tireless efforts earned her national acclaim when she was named a national finalist for Time Magazine’s National Dealer of the Year award for 2010. Like father, like daughter.
